Hard to say how proud I am of this kid.


Wil received the 2017 Stephanie Phillips Survivorship Award for outstanding courage and leadership in the fight against cancer. Huge Thanks to Coaches vs Cancer STL. We support their mission of raising awareness and funding. Coach Jason Wolfard at Lindbergh nominated Wil for this award and we are grateful to him and his entire coaching staff.

Coaches vs Cancer Speech 2017 - Wil Ohler
Thank you for this award.Thank you to Coach Wolfard for nominating me. Thank you to the family of Coach Stephanie Phillips, I’m sure her family misses her even more so during basketball season.


Cancer is not a team anyone ever wants to join. The week before I received my leukemia diagnosis I was playing a soccer tournament in Chicago. Yes, I had been feeling bad for a very long time, but as an athlete, you just suck it up and play. I was a soccer goalie who played for the National League. My team had two state championships, a regional title, and a trip to the National Championships. I only share that with the athletes in this room to let you know that I was a top level high school athlete reaching the top of my game when my cancer diagnosis was delivered.


You think that you understand when people say, “Enjoy every moment because it can be taken away in the blink of an eye” but you won’t really understand until it happens to you. Before cancer I thought that losing a game was the worst thing that could happen, but it's not. Everything in my life will be defined by that moment, the day I was diagnosed. As you go through your basketball season, and life, you are going to have lots of defining moments.

I hope that your basketball season is full of spectacular moments. But do me a favor, when you or a teammate or your coaches is struggling in the moment. Flash them the W sign (example), remind them that “Wil wins, we win” to give them strength to get through the moment.


Thank you again for this honor. I hope that you take time in life to enjoy the moments, take a moment to say thank you, take a moment to have a word of encouragement to a teammate, really take a moment every day to spread kindness, laughter and love because those are the important moments.

5/25/2017 So, Wil is resting at home. It was a bit of struggle balancing him as he walked from the car all the way to the upstairs bedroom, but we made it! None of us were ready for him to leave the "safety" of the hospital. There you have a whole team of nurses with all that equipment to monitor him, so it was nerve wrecking thinking of bringing him home with nothing to help keep an eye on his vitals. After nearly a week of watching machines and carefully watching his pulse, checking his oxygen, and monitoring his heart rate it was hard to fathom going cold turkey. We joked that it was like bringing home your first baby. You can't believe they're just letting you walk out with this fragile young human. Scary. As of today, he's still in a lot of pain, his port continues to bleed, he's had a bloody nose, his bones ache, his back is sore, and is bored already :) However, sleeping in a nice big soft bed has helped...those hospital beds are definitely not built...

Cardinals Fantasy Camp 2018

"Sports is all I've known." - Wil Ohler Cardinals Fantasy Camp 2018 I will never be able to truly explain what this trip meant to me, but I do know what Wil misses most of all about soccer is the relationships. He is a very talented, competitive athlete who was/is wide open on most occasions. He loves everything about sports and soccer in particular. He has more random sports stats and facts in his head than should really be possible. But what he misses the most is the bonding (laughing, jaw jacking, rough housing, inside jokes, etc) that happens when you are part of a team. He just didn't really know it until it was gone and he got to have a small bit of that back on this trip. I will be forever grateful to Dr Rob and the Cardinals, every former Cardinals legend in attendance and every camper who attended who ALL took time to give Wil words of encouragement (as well as donate lots of money for research for teenage Leukemia).
